Author Thesis Reflection Will Near
I chose Jack Kerouac because I have always been interested in him as a person and in his message in particular. I had been meaning to read On the Road for a long time before this process and it had never happened. I also didn’t want to pick an author that had been written about by many people before me. I wanted my choice to be unique, so I picked Kerouac. I read The Dharma Bums, On the Road, and The Subterraneans. Out of those three my favorite was definitely The Dharma Bums. Kerouac’s books were difficult largely because of his writing style. He often wrote his books in a steady stream of consciousness. In the case of On the Road and The Subterraneans it took him 72 hours to complete each one. Even with the difficult writing style the books were still engaging and I would definitely encourage anyone to pick Jack Kerouac for their author thesis. Most of all, I would recommend Kerouac because he is so different. He was not a normal writer and saw the world through different eyes, the eyes of the Beat Generation. Everyone should read Kerouac because he truly changed America by giving the Beats a voice. When reading I would definitely recommend underlining passages in the book because you can then refer back to them when writing the paper which is a huge help.

I would recommend Jack Kerouac for the American Author thesis project because I found it easy to relate with Jack Kerouac since he writes autobiographically through fictional characters. Even though I would recommend this author I would tell the student I was recommending it to, to chose the books he/she reads wisely for I found it very difficult to relate The Subterraneans with On The Road and Big Sur. The Subterraneans was also written in a style that is completely different from his other books that I read and if I could travel back in time and change which books I read, I would have read Dharma Bums instead. However obvious it may be that Jack Kerouac autobiographically writes through his protagonists in each novel, I would advise any person who chooses him to view the characters as there own separate fictional characters that are completely unrelated to Jack Kerouac. I would advise this because it allows the person reading his novels to focus on the similarities of his themes that are on a broader scale of similarities in his characters.

I really enjoyed reading Jack Kerouac this year because I got to know him very well through all his books. His books all have similar underlying themes because they are about his personal experiences and his thoughts. However, his writing style can be difficult to read and understand, because he mostly writes in a continuous stream (he wrote The Subterraneans in 72 hours). Even though it was a little harder to read I found it interesting to read something different. My favorite book was Dharma Bums, and I also liked On The Road. The Subterraneans varied more from the rest of the books I read. Desolation Angels was very long and not as interesting. Big Sur was a really good book to read last, because it showed Kerouac later in life than his previous books. I would suggest starting with On The Road, as it is his most famous book and one of his first major novels. Definitely read Jack Kerouac, it will make Author Thesis a lot more fun.

When I chose Kerouac I did not know much about him and his life but I chose him because the basic plot of his books seemed interesting to me. Though I do not regret choosing him and I am happy with my choice, Kerouac may not be for everyone. Though his books deal with themes such as identity, experience, self-discovery and other relatable topics that are interesting to read about Kerouac’s writing can be difficult to understand at times. He often writes in long run on sentences with little punctuation and complex, meanings. At times I found myself having to reread passages in order to fully understand them and other times I had to think a lot about a book even after finishing it to understand what I had just read. The books I chose were On The Road, Big Surr and Satori in Paris of which Big Surr and Satori in Paris were harder to understand. Though it was challenging for me to connect Big Surr to the other two books, most of his books center around the same themes and have great potential for good essays. In conclusion I believe that Kerouac's books offer a lot of material for a good essay, however Kerouac style of writing requires a lot of attention in order to be understood.

I read The Dharma Bums and On the Road. Kerouac's background is a significant part in the conception of these stories, I would recommend that you check him out. I loved both books- his writing style is so unlike anything I'd ever experienced. Dharma Bums now takes the place for my favorite book. If you work better with concrete details and straightforward phrasing (like Steinbeck), Kerouac is not for you. He has an almost poetic flow, the other comments get into it really well, and at times reads in a dreamlike fashion. He was under the influence of many, many hard drugs while writing these books. If you still are encouraged, read the other comments (if you haven't already) and if you want to go with him, do it. I had some very personal connections with both books, and I found them easy to write about. Both reading and writing started out rather slow, but my momentum increased exponentially and despite authors thesis I had a really good time with the books. I undoubtedly would do him again and I intend to read more him.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
