I chose Eudora Welty for my American Author Thesis after reading one of her short stories. Most of Welty’s stories take place in Mississippi, and she captures the overall atmosphere and culture of the South in a way that makes you feel very familiar with the setting. Welty is also wonderful at bringing her characters and their relationships to life and showing their humanity, even if some of her stories have an aspect of mythology in them. I really loved how Welty’s prose can be beautiful in a very poetic, meaningful way, and some of her stories also contain an element of humor that makes them entertaining to read. I think Welty’s works are different enough from each other to get a reader’s interest and similar enough that one can find common themes, and there are many strong quotes to find for supporting an argument. Most of her work is relatively short (mostly novellas and short stories). If you are thinking about choosing her, I would definitely recommend reading The Optimist’s Daughter and a collection of her short stories, especially The Golden Apples. Overall, I found Welty’s work imaginative, emotional, and thought-provoking.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
