For my author thesis paper I choose to do Anne Tyler. I choose her because she was a relativity new writer and would be easier to read compared to other American authors who mainly write in old English. I also choose her because I could relate to her writings because I have lived/ are living in the same time period. The three books I read were Back When We Were Grownups, Accidental Tourist, and The Homesick Restaurant. Her books were relatively easy overall (writing about and reading/ taking notes). I would recommend future sophomores to read Anne Tyler novels. Although her books were very similar this makes it easy to write about. For reading Anne Tyler I would recommend taking detailed notes so you don’t have to reference the books often while you are writing.

I chose Anne Tyler as an author for the paper because the topics she wrote about interested me, and her work did not seem too difficult to analyze and write about. The books I read were: Breathing Lessons, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, Searching for Caleb, and Back When We Were Grownups. I considered these books to be fairly easy to read. I would recommend this author for the Author Thesis project because it provides a variety of themes to choose from. I would suggest focusing on quotes and planning ahead in terms of reading, because they are quite long.

Anne Tyler's novels were a bit lengthy and boring for me. I read Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, The Accidental Tourist, and Ladder of Years. Although her novels had interesting events and had good and realistic family problems, they also had a lot of repetitive, uninteresting information. The Accidental Tourist was the best in my opinion as it kept me interested the most, but when I was reading Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant I couldn't stay focused for more than 20 minutes at a time. Her novels are good, but the characters and plot are dull most of the time.

For my author thesis paper I decided to do Anne Tyler. I picked her because I felt like she would be an easy-read, since most of her books focused on marriage and struggle and family. The books that I chose to read were, Breathing Lessons and Amateur Marriage. I thought the process of reading the books were both easy, and the writing process was pretty easy too once I came up with a thesis statement. Since the two books that I read were pretty similar just with different characters, I felt like this was a reason why the writing process was so easy to me. Her novels were very repetitive, which got boring after awhile. Although, I found it pretty boring, I thought it was interesting because it was a topic that most authors do not write about. I would recommend upcoming sophomores to read Anne Tyler's novels, if they like novels that deal with marriage and topics like marriage and love, and the struggles of a relationship. If someone were to choose this author, I would suggest making sure you choose really good, and detailed quotations, because that was what helped me the most while writing this paper.

I would recommend Anne Tyler if you want a pretty easy read. Her books are easy to read, but get extremely repetitive. I chose to read The Accidental Tourist, Ladder of Years, and Noah's Compass. The length of her books is pretty reasonable, but can seem like slow reads since they are so similar. Anne Tyler is a good author for someone looking for an easy time finding connections...that is because all her books have pretty much the same plot and characters so connecting them in your essay is easy. However, because all of her works are almost exactly the same, it is harder to go deeper in you analysis..which could get difficult if you are an honors student. She writes about marriage, affairs, and family struggles so if you really do not like these topics do not chose her for your author. I liked Noah's Compass the most because it was more interesting than her other works and did not put me to sleep. Overall, Tyler is a pretty easy author but can get extremely repetitive.

My author was Anne Tyler and the books I read by her were A Slipping Down Life, The Amateur Marriage, and Patchwork Planet. In the end the paper worked out but the process was somewhat stressful. I thought that the books were too repetitive, however the books were not bad. It was kind of hard to pick a topic from each book hat occurred in all three. It was helpful to go to my English teacher for some advice and once we found one that connected, it all fell into place. The books I read were mostly about love, relationships, and families that ended up not working. I would recommend Anne Tyler if you like books with a lot of descriptions and tension with in a families.

When choosing your author, I strongly suggest you take your time and think about why you do not enjoy reading certain authors. For me, I struggle with reading old English, so I knew I wanted a current day author. I came across Anne Tyler, who published a recent book in 2012. This book was called The Beginner’s Goodbye, as well she has written, The Accidental Tourist, The Tin Can Tree, Noah’s Compass, Celestial Navigation and A Slipping Down Life. Anne Tyler’s books ranged from 200 pages to 350 pages, but it was easy to follow the plot and characters. I started from finding a few common themes that I looked for in the books to follow. I recommend Anne Tyler because she writes about events that could happen in your life. My recommendation is to keep notes on the relationships between characters because their relationships shift.

My author was Anne Tyler, and found writing my author thesis paper about her books was very easy because you can connect her books together in many ways. The two books I chose to relate was "Ladder of Years" and "The Accidental Tourist". My main theme I chose to relate these two books together was isolation. In both books, the main characters experience family issues, and when you read between the lines, you discover why these characters issues take place, and lots about their personality. I found as I was writing my paper, I thought of more and more connections to write about along the way. The more I thought about the book, the more I thought they were similar. Considering these books were so similar, I switched off between each book per paragraph, relating both books to the same topic. I felt that my paper was very well organized and did not have any trouble when writing it. I strongly recommend Anne Tyler because she writes about situations that one can relate to, and it's easy to pick out the overall message that she is trying to portray.

I chose Anne Tyler for my author thesis book because I found the books not to challenging to understand. I am not the best reader so I felt these books weren't to challenging for me. I read Ladder of Years and the accidental tourist. I would recommend this author if you enjoy family based books. The author writes about stories I could often relate to and I think others could as well. Overall it was pretty easy to connect the two books and petray the message because most of her novels connect with family problems. I recommend this author for author thesis project and to read the two books I reAd.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
