Oates is an author for those who enjoy novels about difficult times in life. Her novels are quite lengthy, but she also has written novellas, which are about 150 pages each. The plots in the novels are introduced at the beginning of the novel, and as each chapter goes on, she reveals details essential to piecing the story together. Although the details are interesting and left me wanting more information, the overall flow is somewhat slow, and often left me thinking, "Okay, I already know this." The novel Black Water was very confusing to me and I had a hard time following the plot because I was transported in time from chapter to chapter. Her topics about tragedy are definitely for the reader who enjoys reading a novel about the truth of situations and the tragedies in life in their rawest form.

Oates is an author for those who who like depressing stories. It is important to know before choosing this author that the plot can be confusing. I enjoyed reading Missing Mom and Rape: A Love Story neither were very long. It is somewhat hard to connect all the books when you are writing your paper but once you find the connection you will have plenty of information to back it up. Oates style of writing is hard to follow but it is a good challenge. Overall I would recommend Oates for the American Author Thesis because the topics of the books are interesting.

Oates novels follow young characters through their struggles in life. Her plot moves very slowly at some points but come together well. Every little detail placed in the novel is there for a reason and will add to the significant as a whole. Oates' novels are for those who have patience to read them and who like to understand how different types of people act under the pressures of death and other tragedy. Her novels become very dark at points but end up working out for the best. Some of her novels like Missing Mom are long and hard to read but others such as Freaky Green Eyes are about 150 pages. If you chose Oates I suggest that you take note of all the little thing because even if they don’t seem important they end up being the most important.

Joyce Carol Oates' books are beautifully crafted and poetic in nature. Her style makes her books lovely to read, and of her many novels and novellas, it will be easy to choose books with similar themes. If you have difficulty understanding poetic language such as similies and metaphors, you may want to shy away from Oates for your thesis. Oates has written novels that are lengthy, at over 700 pages, as well as novellas that are just over 100. If you do choose a longer book, be sure to stay on schedule or the procrastination will catch up on you. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Oates for my Author Thesis and highly recommend her books.

I chose Joyce Carol Oates as my author for Author Thesis. To be honest, I chose her because my teacher recommended her. I had to choose an author quickly because I had to switch authors, so I didn’t get I chance to look at Oates’ works very closely. I read Expensive People, I’ll Take You There, and My Sister, My Love. I didn’t really enjoy reading her books because she writes several pages without a break for a paragraph and it was really overwhelming. Her descriptions, although they are interesting, are very in depth and will annoy you if you like to read straight forward stories. She also writes about upsetting events which can become graphic at times. I would’ve enjoyed her books if I was reading them for leisure, but they were tough to get through for a deadline. Even though the books were somewhat of a struggle to read, I enjoyed writing my essay because the themes in my three books overlapped perfectly.

The books are pretty short and quick to read, which is helpful because you are able to spend more time writing, than you have to for reading. They are interesting, if you like to read books that are about things that actually happen in the real world, or that are semi depressing. Although some of her books are short, others of her books are very long and may seem scary at first. The plot makes up for the length of the book because is it interesting, and most of the time you can connect to it on a certain level. The novels Rape; a Love Story, and Black Water, are very similar, and are very short also, so I would recommend you read those two novels together.

Oates is an author for those who like to read about people going through difficult times and trying to fix or change something about their lives. She has written novels that are long, and other novellas which are much shorter, so there is a large variety to choose from. I found that themes overlapped very well throughout her writing, so it was easy to come up with a thesis. I chose to read Oates' stories of shorter length, however, looking back I think it would have been better to choose longer novels because those that I read seemed to be much less interesting. I would recommend Oates for Author Thesis, however the novels should be chosen by what most interests the reader, rather than chosen because of the length.

Joyce Carol Oates did not attract me instantly, her books seemed very dark and I was not interested in this at first. But after giving the first book a chance, I really enjoyed her writing styles in the three books that I read by her. I read Big Mouth, Ugly Girl, Freaky Green Eyes, and The Tattooed Girl. The first two books that I read by Oates were very easy and I enjoyed reading them, where as The Tattooed Girl was a lot more challenging and longer but all three books had clear meanings and themes that I could understand. I would definitely recommend Joyce Carol Oates for the American Author Thesis project because she has a particular writing style that she uses through all her novels and can be easily understood by her readers. Her writing is also appealing because it is not too advanced and can be enjoyed. Definitely when reading, look for quotes. I think a lot of her writing as a deeper meaning that I did not find because I read without specifically looking for quotations to use in my thesis paper.

The author that I chose was Joyce Carol Oates. I chose her because I became interested when I read the summaries of some of her books. The books that I read by Joyce Carol Oates are Black girl/White girl, The Tattooed Girl, and Foxfire. Joyce Carol Oates writes about different relationships that people have with each other. Whether it’s friendships or romances. She illustrates the constructions and destructions of relationships. The books that Oates write are easy to read, although they are quite lengthy. The style of her writing is very interesting. In some of her books, Oates leaves one page with just one quote. This allows the reader to think about the book in a deeper meaning and to compare different events in the book to that one quote. I Would recommend her books because they really pull you in, every chapter leaves you wanting to know more.

I decided to choose Joyce Carol Oates under the false impression that her books would be fast, enjoyable reads. The books that I read were Black Girl/ White Girl, Rape a Love Story, Missing Mom, We Were the Mulvaney's, Do With Me What You Will, and The Tattooed Girl. Although these books were written in a style that under any other circumstances would have been an easy read, the dark events that took place slowed me down and left me disliking Oates as a writer. Parts of these books were bearable but few were enjoyable. If I had more time for the project, I probably would have abandoned my books and chosen a different author. I also found that Oates is very descriptive, which is expectedly a good quality for a writer, but some of the descriptions were difficult to endure. Oates also left the novels off at a place where you felt comfortable enough to let the character go and the story to end, which was a redeeming part of her novels. I would say that if you are going to choose Joyce Carol Oates, expect to be made uncomfortable and quite possibly upset.

I picked Joyce Carol Oates because I love Jodi Picoult books and her writing is similar to Oates's. I read The Gravedigger's Daughter, Expensive People, The Falls and I'll Take You There. Her books are interesting but also kind of disturbing and depressing. Her shorter books that I read-I'll Take You There and Expensive People- were easier to read and went by quickly. Her longer books-The Falls and The Gravedigger's Daughter- were very interesting but kind of hard to read because they went on for such a long time. Her books are easily understood by readers and have interesting, dark themes and relationships. I liked her, however if you do not like emotional books and dark topics I would not recommend her for you because she writes about very tragic events that happen throughout the characters' lives and how they effect them. But I found it easy to find quotes about the characters' misfortunes and I was able to find a deeper meaning to them. I bought and marked up the books which I thought ended up being very helpful. Don't procrastinate!! and good luck!!

Joyce Carol Oates has a reoccurring theme of young girls having to face and overcome struggles in their life. Many of these characters face hardships and later find love to try to fulfill their empty heart. Joyce’s stories can be kind of depressing some times, depending on which ones you read. Multiple books have the topic of rape, alcohol, and family struggles brought up within them. One thing I did not like about Joyce’s books is the pacing. When reading her books, the pace could be kind of slow and repetitive, although when you came to the end of the book, it seemed as if she was trying to rush everything in and have all the main events happen at the end. Overall, I enjoyed her books and found many reoccurring themes, making the essay easier to plan, and I liked reading her books as well.

Joyce Carol Oates was an interesting author, she was sort of a slow read but overall an interesting author. By the end of this project i really enjoyed the books I was reading. They were interesting, had a lot of twists to them and they all consisted of similar themes. I read a short story collection called, Will You Always Love Me, Black Girl/White Girl and I'll Take You There. Reading a short story collection was hard and I would not suggest it. I would recommend Joyce Carol Oates for the American Author Thesis Project because she is an author that has constant themes between all of her novels and makes you interested in the books.

For Author Thesis I read three novels by Joyce Carol Oates, Rape: A Love Story; After The Wreck, I Picked Myself Up, Spread My Wings, and Flew Away; and Expensive People, I found that Oates has very dark style of writing and she tends to write about tragic events that her main characters face. In the beginning of brainstorming possible ways to connect my books, I had quite a hard time finding the right idea to connect them. Yet, by meeting with my teacher and writing and erasing many possible ideas, I ended up finding a really strong point to connect my novels and found that I had a lot of evidence to back up my point. Overall, I would recommend this book and I wouldn’t. I believe the ideal reader for this book is someone who is mature and can handle reading about such deep and life impacting events. I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone who is not that mature and cannot handle being emotionally involved with their novels.

Joyce Carol Oates was a rushed choice for me. I did not do much research on her and I did not know anything about her works of literature. I chose the books I read by her randomly. Fortunately, I was content with my choice. I read the novels Rape: A love Story, Solstice, and After The Wreck, I Spread My Wings And Flew Away. Solstice and Rape: A love Story were very confusing at times and hard to follow along if you do not pay close attention, but I found it extremely easy to find common themes among her books. For example, in all three books, each character has his/her share of trauma, and how they deal with their trauma depends on their romantic and family relationships. They’re mostly dark and depressing, but have interesting plots. I would definitely recommend Joyce Carol Oates for the American Author Thesis project.

Joyce Carol Oates’ novels are quite effective in spreading awareness about important issues that are frequently ignored due to discomfort in discussing them. Oates’ novels are ideal for optimistic and open-minded individuals, who are interested in exploring adult level issues that can be disturbing and depressing at times. Common themes I encountered during my reading were sexual abuse, murder, discrimination, obsession, self-destruction, and the vulnerability of women and children in society. Several of my favorite novels were Black Girl/White Girl, Zombie, and After the Wreck I Picked Myself Up, Spread my Wings and Flew Away, because they were quite powerful and at a relatively short length, Oates opened my eyes to tragedies in the world and how involved individuals are affected. Oates does a tremendous job in compelling the reader to experience these issues by involving the reader in the story, allowing him/her to feel the effects of these crimes. Thus, it takes a mature reader to enjoy these novels and withdraw Oates’ messages embedded in the gore and vivid imagery throughout her novels. The lengths of her novels vary greatly, some being over 700 pages, while others remaining around 100 pages. The similar themes within her novels make Oates an excellent choice for author thesis, and the mature individual with the curiosity to explore adult level content would greatly enjoy the process of exploring Oates’ novels.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
