I would recommend Nathaniel Hawthorne for someone who likes romance and conflict. He created engaging stories that are hard to resist reading. The details that he uses in his novels makes the reader feel so connected to each and every character within the whole entire story. He writes about societal expectations and sends the message that everyone should have the freedom to do as they please without feeling as if they must follow society. Although Hawthorne’s novels have fascinating plots that pertain to complicated relationships, the language is difficult to understand especially considering the novels were written in the mid-1800’s. Even though the novels were written almost two hundred years ago, they connect to the modern world very well and many can relate to his stories. Nevertheless, Hawthorne would be the author for you if you are interested in a wide variety of romance, society, and conflict.
Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.
Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
