Tennessee Williams is a playwright whose plays follow the lives of a variety of American families. They are fast-paced and focus on the struggles people face within relationships. Most of the plays deal with love, or more accurately the problems that come with love. While clearly some characters and themes were the same throughout the plays he explored a variety of situations to apply them in. From a story of men in prison (Not About Nightingales) to the story of two young couples struggling and in love (Period of Adjustment), the tension never dies. Period of Adjustment was a favorite. Although it explores an everyday topic, Williams uses tension in an unbelievable way, making it nearly impossible to put it down. Even though each play was unique they could become slightly repetitive. If you enjoy reading plays, and stories which deal with love and hardships, I would highly recommend reading Tennessee Williams.

Tennessee Williams is a play-write who has usually written about average American families. His plays are fairly easy to read and understand, however some are difficult to connect to others. I would most defiantly recommend Tennessee Williams for the American Author Thesis, his plays are humorous, and dive deep into human emotion. To find similarities in his plays I recommend taking down a lot of notes about the characters and what they say. Most of his plays are connected through the characters. If the notes are good in capturing who the characters really are then writing about the plays will be a breeze. Three of the plays I read were The Glass Menagerie, The Night of the Iguana, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

So, you want to read the dramatic and extremely theatrical plays of Tennessee Williams? Hey, if you prefer shorter books, that are interesting, exciting and slightly twisted, (only in some instances) then Tennessee Williams is perfect. The longest play I read was a little less than 200 pages, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” It was by far my favorite play; it greatly emphasizes the value of family and friends in the southern states of America. For the most part, his plays are rarely over 150. This was perfect for me, I get so bored with long books, I loose interest, and then it takes me forever to finish. But, if you think studying Tennessee Williams will give you an automatic A, sorry, but not quite. His plays are rather confusing at times, and I definitely recommend re-read some of his plays. Overall, every one of his plays I read (nine, to be exact) was interesting and enjoyable, and I highly advise considering Williams as your author.

Before starting the Author Thesis project I did not have an idea of which author I wanted to read or any specific style of writing that I was interested in. When I started searching for an author and came across Tennessee Williams I was immediately interested in his plays. I read a range from his most famous plays such as, A Street Car Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, and Summer and Smoke, to some of his most criticized and personal plays such as, Spring Storm and Something Cloudy, Something Clear. For me, reading plays and studying the dialogue seemed more interesting than reading six big books. Williams’ plays are easy to read, and for the post part the plot is simple. The challenges I faced, however, was spending the time pulling out the dialogue that mattered and finding the deeper meaning in the quotations. Sometimes I found it hard to prove my themes because, unlike when you read a book, you cannot get inside the characters head and all the evidence you have is what they say. I highly recommend reading Tennessee Williams, and if not for author thesis then just in general. His plays never bored me and I enjoyed the project because I liked what I was reading.

Hey there sophomore English student. So you’re looking for an author for your Author Thesis? Look no further: As a sophomore, I chose the playwright, Tennessee Williams, who I highly recommend to you. First off, Tennessee Williams wrote plays, which are so much shorter and much easier to manage than a 1000000000 page book. Second of all, there are so many themes that appear in each of his plays. This can also be kind of intimidating because there is so much there in each of his plays that I was constantly asking myself, “Literally HOW am I supposed to choose one thing to write about?!??!!??”. But never fear! Sometimes it will be hard, and I cannot say otherwise, but in the end, you will be so grateful that you chose Tennessee Williams because you will end up with a thesis you love. Tennessee Williams is a literary genius, so please take advantage of that because if you do, you will end up with a paper that you care about and one that will leave you fulfilled. Also, plays are just really enjoyable because there is always something going on, and there is almost never a dull moment. I could not put any of my plays down after picking them up.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
