Walter Mosley

Liza: I read four of the books in Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins series, and I liked most of them. There was usually a lot happening and they also had a lot of action in them. I thought the first and second books were the most interesting. However, the next two books were less interesting because there wasn't as much happening in them as the first two. Also, as I continued to read the books, they seemed to be repetitive and very similar to the last, so it was very hard to find differences between each of them. There was a clear argument that connected all of them which made it easier to write my essay, but it was difficult to come up with different arguments and find quotations with different ideas.

I read three novels this year in the Easy Rawlins series by Walter Mosley, who writes detective novels. I read A Red Death, White Butterfly, and Devil in a Blue Dress. All three books have similar themes present in them, because each book is based after the other. Although finding a consistent theme Mosley conveyed was not too difficult, trying to figure out how his main theme portrayed a message to the greater world was. Both death, family, and racial issues are present in each book, which make the books gloomy and depressing. Although the books had a somber feel to them, the work life of Easy Rawlins is highly intriguing and makes you not want to put the book down.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
