One of the most important factors leading to a successful experience for Author Thesis is picking an author who not only interests you, but also challenges you. I really enjoyed reading Ralph Ellison for those reasons. He focuses on race and the American experience, in a way that nothing we read in the classroom does. His writing style is difficult to adjust to at first because of the style of narration, as he uses a stream of consciousness technique to tell his stories. But after I got used to it, I realized it was a very valuable perspective. I read Invisible Man, Juneteenth, and the short story collection Flying Home and Other Stories. These three works centered around the same core themes, while each bringing a different dimension of Ellison's message. This connection lent itself well to the synthesis that is the Author Thesis paper. All in all, I strongly recommend Ralph Ellison if you are looking for an indelible experience that teaches you something about yourself and your world.

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
