I had Julia Alvarez for my Author Thesis and I enjoyed her very much. I had read her book "Before We Were Free" in seventh grade and had enjoyed it very much. So for Author Thesis I read "In the Time of the Butterflies," "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents," and "In the Name of Salome." They were all spectacular but my favorite was "In the Time of the Butterflies." With this combination of books I had a really easy time finding a common theme and ultimately a great thesis. Alvarez generally writes about girls from the Dominican Republic that are trying to escape the dictatorship that has over taken their country. Some of the books are "Gossip Girl" style where as others are more action, adventure, and suspense style. Overall great author to read.

I chose the author, Julia Alvarez because she wrote about different cultures, and stories with adventures, which was appealing to me. I read three books of hers, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of The Butterflies, and Saving The World. The level of difficulty varies from book to book. They are intense topics, with a lot to comprehend and understand but the reading itself is not difficult, and it is very easy to engage in the topics. I would recommend my author for American Author Thesis because her books are enjoyable, and she is easy to write about. This is because she has very apparent themes which are easy to explore. I enjoyed her writing, because she incorporates some Spanish into her books, which is interesting and different. I would suggest researching some of the Dominican Republics culture, because I did this and used this information in my conclusion and introduction and it made everything tie together well.

I chose the author Julia Alvarez because I had heard about one of her novels through my sister who read one of them for school. She said How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents was one of the most enjoyable novels she ever read for school. For my Author Thesis, I read How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, In The Time of The Butterflies, and Saving The World. The books weren’t hard to read at all, but you just have to follow the story closely because she usually writes from the perspective of multiple characters. The hardest part about writing on these three novels is forming your thesis statement. The author doesn’t really make concrete statements so you have to infer a lot of things she says.

I chose the author Julia Alvarez to write about for my American Author's Thesis. The books that I reader were In the Time of the Butterflies, Return to Sender, and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents. I overall enjoyed reading the books, but there were some small things I did not like. I wish that someone had told me the style of Alvarez's books and how they were written. Along with this, they are all written in multiple perspectives which does actually make writing the paper much more difficult since it causes the need for extra background knowledge. The books, however, carried multiple similar themes, which was very easy in figuring out what to write about. Overall, I would choose this author to write about.

My name is Elizabeth and I just finished my author thesis on Julia Alvarez. In terms of finding a common theme, she is an excellent choice for an author. All of her books tend to share similar stories, but they can be written in alternating perspectives sometimes, so you have to pay attention to who is speaking. For my paper, I read How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Saving The World, Yo, and Finding Miracles. All four books were to relate to each other, which made finding a common theme very easy. I highly recommend this author, especially if you are interested in cultural stories and the process that one goes through when adapting into a new place.

I chose Julia Alvarez for my author because I read a book in the eighth grade with a similair topic to those she writes about and enjoyed it very much. I read In the Time of the Butterflies, Return to Sender, and Finding Miracles. Finding Miracles is my favorite because they characters are very relatable and it has some romance in it. Alvarez's books are easy to read and connect. They are interesting and remind me of teen novels. Reoccurring themes were clearly present, which made the author thesis process much easier and simple. Her books are very easy to read so if you are looking for a challenge, I would not pick her. My author thesis experience was enjoyable and not overwhelming because of Alvarez.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
