For my author thesis, I chose Louise Erdrich because I had previously read her novel, The Round House, and loved it. For author thesis, I read Love Medicine, The Plague of Doves, Shadow Tag, and Tales of Burning Love, and thoroughly enjoyed them too. As Erdrich herself is of Native American descent, most of her books take place on reservations in the late 20th century, and deal with issues that many Native Americans still face today. Other common themes include substance and physical abuse, sexism, racism, family, loss, and religion. While Erdrich’s poetic voice and meticulously thought out setting make her books entertaining, she is also brutally honest and candid when addressing sensitive topics. Overall, I found her books to be extremely interesting and moving, and I highly recommend her.

American Author Thesis

Now that you have written your essay, we ask that you reflect on the reading portion of the experience and write 100-150 words about your author.

Think of what you write as advice for someone next year and beyond, someone who (like you were doing last fall) is thinking about choosing your author - and maybe even the same three books - to read for the assignment.
